We all love to play slot machines. They’re entertaining, with the promise of a large payout. But the science of slot machines isn’t simple. It’s a complex and rapidly evolving field. That’s why we asked David Leong, Raja Slot88 a professor of game theory at Carnegie Mellon University, to take a look at the future of online slot machines.
He’s done this before: in the past, he’s also talked about the future of online casinos, video games, and the study of human behavior. In a talk given to the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in 2013, he explained how to build a slot machine to maximize profits.
Online slot machines can be fun and lucrative, but they’re not without risk. To maximize your chances of winning, Leong says you should pay attention to the “three Rs.”
Second, read the rules of the casino. “In general, you want to play at a casino that allows you to maximize your expected winnings,” he says. “The reason is that if you’re a low-risk player, the casino will treat you well. If you’re a high-risk player, it’s going to be more stingy with its profits.”
Third, read the rules of the slot machine. “In general, you want to play at a slot machine that will pay you the most money for the least amount of risk,” he says. “It’s like a slot machine at a casino, where the slot machine has an expected win percentage that’s related to the size of the jackpot.”
To do this, Leong suggests you play at a slot machine that’s in the middle of the jackpot range. “The reason for that is that if you play a slot machine that’s higher up in the jackpot range, you’re going to have a higher probability of winning the jackpot,” he says. “But if you play a slot machine that’s lower down in the jackpot range, you’re going to have a lower probability of winning the jackpot.”
But just because the rules are clear, doesn’t mean slot machines are easy. The problem is that you need to be able to figure out what the expected payout is before you play. “If you’re not very good at math, it’s difficult to do that,” he says.
